Cultivating Legacy
Hazera 1939 was founded by Israeli growers at the outbreak of WWII, with the aim of ensuring a constant supply of high-quality seeds, even during turbulent times. Today, the company is still partly owned by growers who have their hands in the dirt, and their hearts set on nourishing the world – and helping other growers do the same.
Knowing better than anyone the ins and outs of the trade, and relying on extensive knowledge and experience developed and accumulated over decades, the growers that own and manage Hazera 1939 have made it their life’s work to breed, cultivate, and improve humanity’s most essential food source. This unwavering dedication has positioned the company as a leading supplier of resilient, high-yielding, top-quality field-crop seeds. Additionally, the company specializes in the production of avocado rootstock seeds and
propagation materials for various vine varieties.
Growers for Growers
Leveraging the diverse, often extreme climate conditions in the different regions of the country, Hazera 1939 owns and manages three agricultural farms spread across Israel. These farms provide optimal breeding, cultivating and testing grounds for the development of varieties that can withstand a wide range of environments – from harsh, semi-arid conditions to Mediterranean climates.
Leadership
Marketing Manager
A grower from birth, an entrepreneur and businessman by practice, and an anthropologist at heart, Itzhak is as comfortable in a conference room as he is on a tractor. Having spent decades studying and accumulating hands-on experience in bringing these passions together, Itzhak is an expert in identifying market needs, changing growing conditions, and new market trends, and in planning seed production accordingly. Fascinated by people, their cultures, and the way they grow, he truly understands his clients and knows how to match growers with the right seeds, finding no greater joy than in seeing them grow into successful crops.
Crop Breeder
A wheat and barley breeder for the past two decades, Arik’s diverse background in genetic breeding, biotechnology, management, and marketing positions him as an expert breeder whose creativity and broad perspective enable him to foresee market trends, and develop crops that will nourish generations to come. This broad vision comes with extensive responsibility for every aspect of the breeding cycle, requiring Arik to meticulously plan, manage and lead the company’s breeding processes both in the field – ensuring correct sowing, care, observation, and harvesting – and in the lab – ensuring that the right characteristics of the grains are maintained. Understanding the complex interaction between the genetic makeup of the plant and the influence of environmental conditions, Arik is able to “look into the plant”, seeing the near-invisible differences that may one day in the future grow stronger, healthier, higher-yielding crops.
CFO
An urbanite among farmers and growers, Uri is a licensed CPA, with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and economics, and a master’s degree in business, specializing in financing and insurance, both from the Tel Aviv University. With a tech financing background – which includes an exciting IPO – Uri fits right in at Hazera 1939 and has made it his professional home for the past 25 years. Ensuring financial stability through the ebbs and flows of the business across decades, Uri has seen the company change and grow, and led activities such as the fast and seamless implementation of Priority software. He leads a lean and dedicated team that takes on any challenge that arises, from M&As to a turnover that nearly doubled in no time, managing everything from contracts and insurance, to procurement. Uri and his team work closely with the banking system, responsible for the company’s debt collection, payments to suppliers, liaising with attorneys, compiling all financial reports, and managing cash flow, bank account and payroll.
CEO
Having devoted most of his adult life to agriculture, Udi is a farmer at heart. After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at the Hebrew University, Udi managed the field crops sector of his kibbutz, where he later held senior management positions. Growing up in the arid southern part of the country, Udi follows the daily weather forecast enthusiastically throughout winter in the hope of rain, knowing no greater joy than a rainy day in his corner of the desert. Udi has been with Hazera 1939 for nearly three decades, first heading the agricultural division, and today as the company’s CEO. His vision for the company is to lead the crop revolution, breeding varieties of high-yielding, top-quality crops that expand agricultural land globally, including in harsh climates and difficult growing conditions.
Product Manager – Field Crops
A born farmer, Benny grew up in fields of cotton, corn, vegetables, and herbs. He has since channeled his passion for agriculture into a lifelong commitment to the quality of the crops he helps grow. After leading the field crop sector in his community, helping growers cultivate and market their produce, nearly two decades ago Benny began working for seed companies as a field crop specialist. With an in-depth understanding of the entire seed lifecycle and unwavering dedication to quality, Benny coordinates between the company’s breeders and growers, inspection and marketing efforts, and of course the clients and market requirements, to ensure end-to-end production of top-quality seeds that align with Hazera 1939’s vision
Propagation Plantation Manager
A third-generation farmer, Asaf was raised under the shade of his family’s peach and apple trees, witnessing the transformation of these plantations into beautiful vineyards that grow exotic grapes. A mud-on-his-boots kind of guy, Asaf joined Hazera 1939 over a decade ago, inheriting the role from a veteran grower – an expert in his field – and began caring for the company’s plantations and vineyards with absolute passion and dedication. Understanding not only the agricultural aspects but the market side as well, Asaf leverages his professional network to constantly improve the quality, versatility and resilience of the seeds the company grows and markets, and derives no greater pleasure than seeing the grapes he loves packed for consumers to enjoy at the end of a long process.
